Ship modeling co. to expand staff
A computer-based maritime modeling company that set up shop at Brunswick Landing last summer intends to increase staff by 50%, citing "outstanding" operations at the former Navy base.
Robert Somerville, chairman of the Houston-based American Bureau of Shipping, said in a letter dated Dec. 21 to Gov. Paul LePage that the success of the company's first five months has led to the decision to add 16 new employees to its existing staff of 30. The company develops and certifies design and construction standards for vessels and marine facilities. In July, the ABS Modeling Center was created to centralize the company's work, some of which had been done in Texas and some overseas.
ABS selected Brunswick after conducting an assessment of several U.S. cities that serve as maritime hubs. At the time of the initial announcement, Somerville said the infrastructure of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station was a key element in the decision because of ABS' need to secure its intellectual property.
