Timber co. seeks to donate land to Baxter State Park

Old Town-based timber management company Huber Resources Corp. is looking to donate a chunk of land around Katahdin Lake to Baxter State Park.

The parcel, which is estimated to be between 90 and 160 acres, is one of two around Katahdin Lake that still remains in private hands, according to the Bangor Daily News. Peter Triandafillou, vice president of the company, said the offer to donate the land "seems like the right thing to do for the park and for the people of the state." He estimated its value to be around $1 million. The Baxter State Park Authority is scheduled to vote on whether to accept the donation on Jan. 12.

Huber Resources manages approximately 600,000 acres of timberland formerly owned by the Huber family. The company has sold the majority of the land to New Hampshire-based investment firm Conservation Forestry LLC, but continues to manage it.
