Ship owners blame tugboat captain for crash

Owners of the MV Harbour Feature, which collided with the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge on April 1, are blaming the Pease Development Authority's tugboat captain for the incident.

The Portsmouth Herald reported the ship's owners, TB Marine Shipmanagement GmbH & Co., said in court documents that the company was required to allow the PDA's tugboat captain to take charge of the vessel within the harbor and, as a result, alleged the company is not at fault for any negligence involved in the ship's unmooring and collision with the bridge.

Maine and New Hampshire, which jointly own the bridge, together have filed a lawsuit against the ship's owners seeking $2.4 million in damages. The states claim that the tanker's crew failed to properly secure the ship and that the PDA, as an agent of the state, is immune from liability under state and federal laws.
