John "Dugan" Shipway is stepping down as president of Bath Iron Works after five years at the shipbuilder's helm.

Shipway, 65, a former rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, will hand the reins to Jeff Geiger, currently senior vice president of operations at BIW, when his resignation becomes effective April 1, Jim DeMartini, BIW's spokesman, told Mainebiz this morning. BIW is owned by Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics. DeMartini said Shipway decided to step down after considering the future priorities of his family and the company.

Geiger, 47, arrived at BIW in 1984, fresh from the University of Michigan, where he graduated with a master's degree in engineering and naval architecture. In nine years, Geiger had been promoted to vice president of engineering. Of the last five BIW presidents, including Shipway, only one other -- William Haggett -- worked his way up the ladder within the organization to become president, according to DeMartini.

Geiger has been working hand in hand with Shipway since he arrived in 2003. "Jeff and Dugan have a long and close relationship," DeMartini said. "The transition will occur over the next six weeks, but it is not a cold transition, it's not like someone who doesn't know what is going on is taking the reins."

Geiger will become BIW's 13th president.
