Shipyard workers to rally against cuts

Workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery are scheduled to rally Thursday against federal cuts that would require them to take 22 unpaid furlough days this year.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Department of Defense is expected to begin notifying its roughly 800,000 civilian employees, including 4,700 in Kittery, about plans for 22 furlough days between April 25 and Sept. 30.

The plight of the shipyard's civilian employees has become a focal point for Maine and New Hampshire's U.S. senators, who sent out a joint statement Tuesday in support of crafting a bipartisan long-term deficit reduction plan that would avoid continuing automatic federal cuts, also known as the sequester.
