Sidney Epstein, a commercial real estate broker who ran the Bangor-based Epstein Properties and completed deals that shaped much of the city’s downtown, died Monday in Scarborough. He was 100 years old.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Epstein’s foray into commercial real estate started in the 1950s as part of an effort to diversify the theater business his father started around 1918. His involvement in local commercial real estate deals included government buildings, shopping plazas and some residential properties, with notable projects like the Key Plaza in Bangor, Brewer Shopping Center, Old Town Plaza, Dryden Terrace in Orono and others, the paper reported.
Epstein was a graduate of Bangor High School’s class of 1931, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania’s class of 1935 and a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps overseeing materials distribution in Pennsylvania during World War II.
