In the wake of PenAir’s pending departure from the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport on June 30, the Airport Advisory Committee and Hancock County commissioners have recommended Silver Airways as the new seasonal carrier.
The Ellsworth American reported that Silver Airways’ code-sharing agreement with JetBlue, which would allow Bar Harbor customers to purchase their entire itinerary at JetBlue’s website, was part of the appeal.
Florida-based Silver Airways was one of two carriers under consideration. The other was Boutique Airlines. The final decision is up to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Pen-Air, one of the largest regional airlines in Alaska and the Northeast, can't afford to serve Bar Harbor without its contract with Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle, which it will lose in July, the Bangor Daily News reported earlier this month.
That left the airport, located in Trenton, little time to find another carrier with the busiest time of year coming up.
PenAir had served Bar Harbor and Presque Isle since 2012. Carriers typically need 60 to 90 days to set up service at an airport. United Airlines has since picked up the Presque Isle-Newark route. United Airlines' service between Presque Isle and Newark will start in July, replacing the Boston-Presque Isle service that PenAir had provided.
Silver Airways is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and averages 125 daily flights to 18 destinations in Florida and the Bahamas, according to its website.
In March 2017, Silver Airways announced an agreement to expand its fleet with up to 50 new ATR-600 series aircraft, a transaction valued at up to $1.1 billion. According to a news release, the deal made Silver Airways the first fully independent U.S. regional airline in more than 20 years to sign a new aircraft deal of that magnitude.
In March 2018, Silver Airways announced service expansion, with flights to Missouri’s Branson Airport, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport, starting Aug. 30.
The Hancock County airport also offers nonstop service to Boston with Cape Air, which is also partners with JetBlue. PenAir will be offering service there from May 25 to June 30.
