Sinking Biddeford Kohl’s building to be rebuilt

Despite clearing safety reviews with city officials, retailer Kohl’s has decided to demolish and rebuild its Biddeford store because the building was sinking in areas, causing internal problems.

The Portland Press Herald reported Kohl’s will close the 88,000-square-foot store in February and plans to open a 66,000-square-foot store in its place by the end of the year.

Roby Fecteau, director of Biddeford’s Code Enforcement Department, told the paper that the building was deemed safe by four engineers, but caused inconveniences for the retailer. Some doors did not close properly and ceiling tiles came loose, Fecteau said.
