Snow-less days hurt some Maine businesses

The lack of snow is southern Maine is leaving some businesses without the kind of activity they typically see during winter months.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the snow-less days have deprived Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook of revenue it typically generates from its cross-country skiing offerings. The cross-country skiing revenue helps the farm stay in business.

More snow in southern Maine is also being desired by snow-filled ski resorts, like Shawnee Peak in Bridgton. Rachael Wilkinson, marketing director at Shawnee Peak, said that's because seeing snow can often help people think of skiing.

The Maine Snowmobile Association said snowmobile sales have been active across the state, noting that many snowmobilers are heading north to catch the snow.
