Snowe seeks more work for BIW

To stem layoffs at Bath Iron Works, Sen. Olympia Snowe is backing a request for $190 million in emergency funding for repair work on Navy ships.

Portions of the extra federal dollars for ship rehabilitation would continue BIW's work on the cruiser USS Port Royal, which ran aground near Hawaii in February, reported The Times Record. BIW welders and others have been doing off-site repairs there for several months. BIW typically shrinks its work force during lulls in its construction of new Navy vessels; 67 machinists were scheduled to be temporarily laid off this week.

Snowe mentioned the additional funding request during a press conference held after Navy Secretary Ray Mabus toured BIW last week.
