Snowfall breaks records in southern Maine

The recent blizzard that bombarded Maine set snowfall records in the southern part of the state, knocked out power for thousands and shut down federal mail service for a day throughout New England.

The Associated Press reported that the weather was enough to stop the famously weather-indifferent U.S. Postal Service across six states on Saturday.

The Portland Press Herald reported that southern Maine was hit the hardest (see an interactive map of the snowfall) with the heaviest snowfall in the state reported in Gorham, at 35.5 inches.

The blizzard broke a previous snowfall record of 27.1 inches for Portland, set in 1979. This weekend's storm brought 31.9 inches to the area.

As the storm made its way through New England, it also cut power for more than 650,000 customers, most of whom were located in Massachusetts, according to The Associated Press.

The news service reported that around 12,000 customers lost power in Maine at the storm's peak.

Fear that widespread outages would hit the state prompted Gov. Paul LePage on Friday to declare a limited state of emergency to allow lineworkers and plow drivers to work beyond the federal hour limits.
