Warm temperatures and scant snowfall have delayed the snowmobiling season in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Snowmobiling pumps a total of nearly $2 billion into the three states, according to the Associated Press, and about $350 million into Maine’s economy every year. The New Hampshire Bureau of Trails, which oversees more than 7,400 miles of snowmobiling trails, said its network won’t open until more snow arrives. Vermont is still recovering from Tropical Storm Irene, which damaged hundreds of miles of trails.
New Year’s Eve usually kicks off the snowmobiling season in Maine, according to Bob Meyers, executive director of the Maine Snowmobiling Association. But for a successful season, he said both landowners and the weather need to be amenable. “One of those is under our control, which is the landowners. We just cooperate with them and we help them and they help us and everybody is happy,” Meyers said. “And the other thing is the weather, which we have zero control over.”
