Some ACA enrollees without insurance cards

Some people who enrolled in health insurance plans through the online marketplace set up by the Affordable Care Act are still without insurance cards they can take to a health care provider.

The Portland Press Herald reported that it’s unclear how widespread the problem is, but insurance officials with Maine Community Health Options told the paper it’s a small percentage of enrollees for which insurers did not receive information from the federal government. Maine is one of 36 states that declined to administer directly the required online health insurance exchanges.

A spokesman for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, the other insurer on Maine’s exchange, told the paper that all paid customers have coverage but the insurer has experienced an “overwhelming call volume” that is causing problems. Brad Woodward, an independent contractor in the wind energy industry, told the paper that he enrolled with Anthem in Maine but was unable to get a “member number” from the insurer that he could use to access his insurance.
