Somerset wind farm draws opposition

A proposed 48-turbine wind farm in Somerset County has stirred up the opposition of a citizens group.

The Friends of the Highland Mountains planned to hold a press conference this morning to announce opposition to the wind farm west of Moscow, according to the Morning Sentinel. Maine-based developer Independence Wind, doing business as Highland Wind LLC, has already earned approval from the Land Use Regulation Commission to install a data-collecting tower on ridgelines on Stewart, Witham, Bald, Briggs Hill and Burnt Hill mountains. The group, which includes one-time gubernatorial candidate and director of the Forest Ecology Network Jonathan Carter, argues the wind farm would industrialize eight miles of mountaintop and would be visible from miles away.

Blue Sky West LLC, a subsidiary of Massachusetts-based First Wind, has also proposed a wind farm in Somerset County in nearby Mayfield Township, according to the paper.
