A broadband connectivity company said it is investing millions to bring broadband access to rural Maine.
Charter Communications Inc., branded as Spectrum, announced today that it is investing around $70 million to expand access to homes and small businesses in Maine.
The company will invest an additional $12 million to extend the network to 3,500 unserved homes and small businesses in Somerset and Oxford counties. It acquired Madison-based Bee Line Cable as a platform for expansion.
The $70 million investment will upgrade service to over 700,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2025.
Charter serves over 466,000 customers in 295 communities and employs more than 750 people across the state.
“These 100% Charter-funded investments will ensure families and small businesses across our entire Maine service area will receive even faster broadband speeds, with the network security and reliability they have come to rely upon,” said Adam Falk, senior vice president of state government affairs at Charter.
“In today’s world, broadband isn’t a luxury — it’s fundamental for our people and our economy. Spectrum’s substantial investment will help thousands of Maine people gain the reliable internet connection they need to work, study, start a business, see a doctor and keep in touch with friends and family,” said Gov. Janet Mills in the release.
