Spending skyrockets in state races

Campaign spending in Maine's legislative races has reached record levels with private groups and individuals funneling more than $1.3 million to political action committees.

The expenditures have triggered more than $760,000 in matching funds for the 80% of candidates for the state Legislature whose campaigns are publicly funded under Maine's Clean Election Act, according to Maine Public Broadcasting Network. But those matching funds are capped at about $38,000 for Senate candidates and $8,000 for House candidates, leading to concerns that those candidates can't compete with the unprecedented private spending.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court denied a request to block Maine's Clean Election law until after the Nov. 2 election in order to address a suit challenging its constitutionality. The request was made by James Bopp Jr., an attorney who has led efforts across the nation to overturn campaign finance laws.
