Sportsman's alliance taps new leader

For the third time in less than a year, the Sportman's Alliance of Maine has hired a new executive director, this time tapping state Sen. David Trahan.

The Waldoboro Republican told the Bangor Daily News he will resign as senator to take the job at SAM in September. Trahan replaces interim executive director and former Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, who has held the post since January. Last October, the group hired a former Florida legislator, Tim Bell, to replace longtime director George Smith, but hired Dunlap six months later in order to take the group in a different direction, Dunlap said earlier this year. He opted against serving as a permanent leader for SAM because he is mulling challenging U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe in next year's election.

Trahan received unanimous support from SAM's board of directors yesterday. A logger by trade, Trahan has served six terms in the Legislature and also been a member of the Legislature's Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee, and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's Advisory Council, according to the paper. He said his focus as SAM's leader would be promoting investment in fish hatcheries, rebuilding the deer population and encouraging youth to hunt, fish and do other outdoor activities. SAM has 14,000 members.
