Land for ME's Future hands out $9M

The Land for Maine's Future program has doled out more than $9 million to 22 conservation projects around the state, exhausting its funds for the foreseeable future.

The board of the program, which is administered by the Maine State Planning Office, picked the projects out of 38 proposals seeking part of the $9.25 million, according to the Bangor Daily News. The projects include preserving nearly 22,000 acres of forest in Washington County, nearly 12,000 acres on Crocker Mountain in Carrabassett Valley and 5,800 acres at Orbeton Stream in Franklin County. In total, they preserved roughly 76,000 acres, including farmland, archaeological sites and high-alpine forests. The amount of money each project is receiving was not disclosed.

While LMF still has $1.2 million for working waterfront programs, its conservation coffers are now empty and could remain so for up to two years. The program uses voter-approved bonds, and the Legislature did not approve a bond package for this year. It is unlikely a bond proposal will be issued before next June or November, and those funds would not be available for another year, according to the paper.
