Spud experts gather for northern Maine summit

Potato producers, crop specialists and farmers will meet in Caribou Jan. 18-19 for an annual spud summit on one of Maine’s top crops, according to the Associated Press.

Exports of Maine potatoes were valued at $19 million in 2015, ranking them 22nd in state exports, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s state foreign trade data. Potatoes are the signature crop of northern Maine, according to the AP, with Maine being the ninth-largest potato producing state in 2015.

The two-day, 32nd Annual Maine Potato Conference and Trade Show will take place at the Caribou Inn & Convention Center. It is being sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, according to UMaine News.

Discussions will include soil health and best practices for pesticides, according to the conference’s website.
