St. Joseph’s College showed off its $4.7 million lighted sports complex with an evening ceremony Monday on the Sebago Lake campus in Standish.

Southern Maine’ first lighted turf and track complex includes an artificial turf and lighted field, an eight-lane track and on-site parking. Construction began in the fall of 2016.

In addition to serving as the home venue for the college’s NCAA Division III soccer, field hockey, track and field, and lacrosse teams, the site will be available for use by others.

“We are proud that this facility will serve not only our student-athletes, but also the college recreation programs that engage the Lakes Region community and other outside groups from all over New England,” St. Joseph’s President James Dlugos said in a statement.

Funding for the new facility came from a wide support base. Donors include Dead River Co., Cross Insurance, OA Centers for Orthopaedics-Spectrum Healthcare Partners, Prime Time Sports, Norway Savings Bank, the Dick Bailey Family, parents of Saint Joseph’s students, and College alumni.

In addition, a Light the Way Challenge was proposed by the Putnam Family who agreed to match one-to-one the dollars raised by Monks supporters towards the lights.

The lights honor Dick Bailey, an advocate for student life and student athletes who has served as the College’s dean of students and softball coach, and currently works as co-head softball coach.

“Many generous gifts from alumni, staff, faculty and parents reached and surpassed the challenge’s goal to fund the lights,” the college said in Monday’s press release.
