State harvests $2.2M in timber

The state's Department of Conservation has reported a near-record harvest of timber on public reserved lands.

A total of 70,600 cords of timber were harvested from the state's 400,000 acres of public operable timberland, 11,000 more cords from last year, according to a press release. The harvest was valued at $2.23 million, an amount higher than recent years. The money supports maintenance, operations and public access to the lands. The state hired local logging contractors in 29 locations and delivered logs to more than 40 Maine mills, helping to support more than 200 private-sector jobs, according to the release. Loggers harvested from late November until March.

The state manages 600,000 acres of public reserved lands for multiple uses, including wildlife habitat and recreation, and they are open to the public for free. They also include areas protected for unique natural and historic features, according to the release.
