State names public access official

The state has named its first public access ombudsman to handle a variety of issues related to Maine's Freedom of Access Act and public records.

Attorney General William Schneider announced the hiring of Brenda Kielty, formerly a special assistant to Schneider, to the public access post in a statement Friday.

In that role, Kielty will respond to informal inquiries about Maine's Freedom of Access Act, resolve complaints, prepare educational materials about the FOAA law and make recommendations about improving access to public records and proceedings.

The position, created in 2006, was left vacant and unfunded until this year.
