State now accepting recreational pot license applications

The state’s Office of Marijuana Policy is now offering applications for potential adult-use marijuana facilities.

Individuals who wish to open marijuana cultivation facilities, product manufacturing facilities and marijuana stores must complete the application, which was made available online Thursday.

The OMP began offering applications for marijuana testing facilities on Nov. 18.

The process of becoming licensed to do business in the recreational pot market also requires applicants to obtain an identification card from the OMP. The office began accepting card applications in early November, a process which includes fingerprinting and background checks. Since then, 400 applications have been received and 146 cards issued, according to a news release Thursday.

In addition to the OMP’s approval of a license, potential marijuana businesses must obtain local authorization from the municipality in which they hope to operate.

“When the Office of Marijuana Policy was established by the Mills Administration in February, we committed to making adult use applications available by the end of the year,” said OMP Director Erik Gundersen in the release. “With today’s action, we have made good on our commitment to an industry and public that have been waiting for nearly three years for this moment.”
