A Hancock County grand jury has indicted Peter Vigue, chairman of Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp., on criminal charges related to his firing of a cannon during a Maine Maritime Academy football game.
Vigue, 72, of Pittsfield, discharged the small artillery piece at a September game in Castine, and the shot struck and injured a referee, according to published reports.
Vigue was indicted Thursday for aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a firearm and possessing or discharging a firearm on a school property. Attempts to reach him for comment Friday were not successful.
Vigue, who heads the state’s largest construction company, is a graduate of Maine Maritime. In keeping with school tradition, he had brought the cannon to the game and fired it after the academy’s team scored, reports said. It’s not clear what the shot consisted of, but the substance hit the referee in the head as he was walking near the sidelines.
The ref was taken to a hospital but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Vigue has been with Cianbro for 50 years, and served as CEO of Cianbro from 2001 to 2018. He has served as chairman since 2008. His son, Peter “Andi” Vigue, is the current CEO.
Aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a firearm are felonies. Discharging a firearm on a school property is a misdemeanor.
