State offers $375K in grants for bicentennial projects

As Gov. Janet Mills tours the state today to kick off the 200th celebration of Maine’s statehood, she announced the launch of a $375,000 grant program that will fund bicentennial-themed events and projects.

Bicentennial Community Grants are available for projects that benefit the public, such as parades, historic preservation efforts, lectures and curriculum, according to a news release Tuesday.

The Maine Bicentennial Commission (Maine200) will consider grant applications from nonprofits, such as historical societies, libraries, government entities and schools. Individuals and for-profit businesses can also apply in partnership with a nonprofit.

The Maine Legislature appropriated initial funding of $375,000 for the grant program, and up to 10% of the amount will be set aside for grants of $500 or less. At least one grant of up to $10,000 will be available in each of Maine's 16 counties.

The Maine Arts Commission will administer the program, and has set three application deadlines: Sept. 1, 2019; Feb. 1, 2020; and June 1, 2020.

“Maine has a proud and storied history, and our bicentennial offers us the opportunity not only to honor it, but to recommit ourselves to the values that shaped us as a state and as a people,” Mills said in the release. “These grants will allow towns, cities, schools and community groups to bring the bicentennial to their own backyards.”

Details of the Bicentennial Community Grants program and a link to the application form are available on the Maine Bicentennial Commission website, under the “Get Involved” section.
