State office eyes Maine's demographic challenges

The Governor's Office of Policy and Management has released an analysis of population data, focusing on the demographic challenges facing the state.

The infographic analyzing U.S. Census data shows that Maine continues to have the highest median age of any state in the country — 43 — and is tied with Vermont for having the smallest percentage of residents under 18 years old. The state also has the highest percentage of baby boomers of any state, at 29.4%, the analysis found.

Regarding population growth, census estimates of Maine's population change show that, while deaths outnumbered births by 103 for the period from July 1, 2011 to July 1, 2012, the overall population grew by 648 as a result of international migration.

Domestic migration estimates showed a net decline of 261 people for the same period.
