The Maine Bureau of Insurance released a comparison of the small group health insurance plans that it wants offered to Mainers through a new federal website.
The Sun Journal reported that the offerings from the nonprofit Maine Community Health Options and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield target a market of around 91,000 Mainers who are covered by small group plans.
The paper reported that the plans offered by MCHO vary from around $247 a month for a 30-year-old smoker in southern Maine to a $1,047 plan for a 60-year-old smoker in the northern part of the state. Similar plans from Anthem, which counts smoking as one of its rate-determining factors, range from $279 per month to $1,487 a month, the paper reported.
The two plans vying for a spot on Maine’s state exchange, which is a key part of the federal Affordable Care Act, still need approval from federal regulators. The ACA calls for those plans to be available through state exchanges by Oct. 1 and to go into effect Jan. 1, 2014.
