State study sees nearly 4% job loss from '07-'11

A study by the state's labor research agency presented a picture of changes to Maine's work force from 2007 to 2011, which included an overall drop in the number of jobs.

The Bangor Daily News reported that 602,737 people were employed in Maine in 2007, prior to the recession. In 2011, that number had dropped nearly 4% to 579,881.

Losses were also noted in construction jobs over that time – which fell from 30,954 to 25,202 – and in retail service jobs, while jobs in the professional and business sector and in the health care sector saw increases.

A press release from the state's Center for Workforce Research and Information highlights job losses specifically in manufacturing, which the study attributed to foreign competition and technological changes.

The study noted that around 60% of workers in manufacturing are over age 45 and identified training for younger workers as a key challenge to that sector.
