State taking applications for pot dispensaries

Nonprofits in Maine can now apply with the state to become medical marijuana dispensaries under the state's new law.

In an announcement made yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Licensing and Regulatory Services said nonprofits must specify where they intend to open dispensaries and where the marijuana will be grown, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Applicants must also pay a $15,000 fee. "It will make sure we get applications from people who are serious about this," Catherine Cobb, director of the licensing division, told MPBN. But Jonathan Leavitt, head of the Maine Marijuana Policy Initiative, said the high fee could bar caregivers with small growing operations for up to six patients from opening a dispensary.

Leavitt told MPBN he's heard from more than 60 groups or individuals interested in applying. The deadline for applications is June 25, and the first dispensaries could be operational by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, more than a dozen Maine communities have adopted or are considering moratoriums to prevent dispensaries from being established.
