The Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township will join forces with the Bangor City Council and Penn National Gaming, the parent company of Hollywood Slots Hotel and Raceway in Bangor, to oppose a casino in Oxford County.
Tribal Gov. William Nicholas told the Bangor Daily News the citizens' initiative, which goes to voters in November, is "too restrictive, one-sided and allows for monopolization of future gaming." He said it also prohibits any other entity from building a casino that would compete with the Oxford site proposed by Black Bear Entertainment. Nicholas also told the newspaper the tribe will be working with the harness racing industry, Penn National Gaming and Scarborough Downs to ensure that any future expansion of gaming in Maine includes the tribes and harness racing.
But Peter Martin, Black Bear Entertainment's representative, said the initiative does not prevent the tribe from introducing new legislation or pursuing a state referendum for its own efforts to locate a casino in Washington County.
