State to end commuter carpool service
The Maine Department of Transportation is ending a commuter carpool service, citing a lack of funding to replace old vehicles. The service is used by about 225 commuters.
After a decade, the DOT will halt the service, run by Go Maine, in May, according to the Portland Press Herald. Go Maine is a program that helps commuters find ride-sharing options. The state owns 27 vans, and up to 25 of them are used every workday to shuttle commuters to Augusta, Portland, Lewiston and Limestone. Sue Moreau of the DOT said more than half of the vans need to be replaced soon, and the state cannot afford to replace aging vans at a cost of $40,000 to $45,000 per vehicle. The Federal Highway Administration gave the state funding to replace six vans in 2008.
Go Maine will help commuters find rides through VPSI Inc., the only private van pool business licensed in the state.
