State to investigate $29M in no-bid contracts

The state will investigate $29 million in no-bid contracts between state agencies and state colleges.

The Legislature's Government Oversight Committee ordered the review of so-called "cooperative agreements" - many of them between the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine - to make sure the state is receiving the best price and contractor for projects, according to the Portland Press Herald. The state Controller's Office will perform the review.

The probe comes after the controller's audit division reviewed some of the state's 138 cooperative agreements last year and identified some problems, which the parties involved have begun to address, the paper said. The new review will scrutinize those agreements more closely.
