State warns businesses of mail scam

State officials are warning again of a mail scam targeting business owners and involving letters from a fake company called "Corporate Records Service" soliciting payment and company information.

According to a press release from Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, the letters urge companies to file corporate information and pay $125 by a certain date to complete corporate meeting minutes, citing state statutes regarding corporate records and annual meetings.

Dunlap said Maine companies are not required to file corporate minutes with the Secretary of State and annual reports should be filed with that office on or before June 1 of each year.

Reports of the scam have continued following its first report in January.

Questions about such solicitations can be directed to the state's Division of Corporations at 207-624-7752.
