Status of Stored Solar biomass plants uncertain

Stored Solar LLC has filed reports with the Maine Public Utilities Commission that show a significant decline in energy output and biomass purchasing over the second quarter of this year.

The Quoddy Tides reported the status of the company’s biomass energy plants in Jonesboro and West Enfield is uncertain. At least three lawsuits have been filed against Stored Solar, two involving logging contractors and one a maintenance company, Professional Logging Contractors of Maine Executive Director Dana Doran told the newspaper.

Stored Solar purchased the two plants from Covanta Energy in October 2016. The company is one of two firms that qualified as recipients of $13.4 million in funding to assist the biomass industry that was approved by the legislature in 2016.

Stored Solar is a subsidiary of the French energy firm Capergy. In April, a Stored Solar spokesman told Mainebiz the company is “committed to working with all the stakeholders to reinvigorate the biomass industry," in recognition of how integral it is to the state's overall $8.5 billion forest products industry.
