Stimulus funds new Portland ferry

Bids to build a new Casco Bay Lines ferry should be coming in soon, thanks to $5.5 million in federal stimulus money awarded to the company.

The new ferry, which would replace the 35-year-old Island Romance, will carry 400 passengers -- 100 more than currently accommodated by the aging vessel, according to a release from U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree's office today.

Nick Mavadones, acting general manager for Casco Bay Lines, said having a new ferry will be more comfortable and more reliable for passengers, and that using stimulus funds avoids the need for a fare increase to pay for a new ferry.

Lee Smith, COO at Washburn and Doughty in East Boothbay, told the congresswoman that they plan to bid on the contract for construction of the new vessel. The new ferry will be equipped with electronically controlled diesel engines that meet the latest federal standards for efficiency and emissions control, according to the release.
