Adding more premium brands to its pantry, Stonewall Kitchen said Friday that it has acquired Spruce Valley Naturals LLC of Napa Valley, Calif., for an undisclosed amount.
Spruce Valley Naturals is the parent company for Napa Valley Naturals, a premium brand of certified organic extra virgin olive oils, culinary cooking oils, Italian balsamic vinegars and aged wine vinegars, as well as Montebello, an artisan brand of organic pastas from Italy.
Friday’s announcement comes nearly a year after York-based Stonewall Kitchen completed the acquisition of the Tillen Farms brand of pickled vegetables and Bada Bing cherries.
In a May interview with Mainebiz, Stonewall Kitchen CEO John Stiker indicated the company was interested in further bolt-on acquisitions of a “select fewer smaller brands.”
In Friday’s announcement he praised Napa Valley Naturals for its “unsurpassed quality and taste; adding: “Delicious stand out products within their line, including the Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Expeller Pressed Avocado Oil and Grand Reserve Balsamic Vinegar perfectly complement the specialty food categories we currently offer.”
Kendall Cook, founder of Spruce and the Napa Valley Naturals brand, said he looks forward to working alongside Stonewall Kitchen to help accelerate the growth of the Napa Valley Naturals and Montebello brands.
Stonewall Kitchen, founded in 1991 by Jonathan King and Jim Stott, has been a portfolio company of private equity firm Centre Partners since 2014.
Best known for its Wild Maine Blueberry Jam, Stonewall Kitchen introduces 50 new products a year — Strawberry Lemonade Jelly and Gochujang Sauce were among this summer’s newcomers — and does about 65% of sales to wholesale clients from small independent retailers to big chains and club wholesalers.
There are 10 company-owned stores including the flagship in York, which includes a cafe and cooking school and attracts some 500,000 tourists a year. Products are sold in 50 countries.
