Stop & Shop pulls out of Maine

Stop & Shop will close its supermarket in Kennebunk, its only store in the state, at the end of the month and lay off its 140 employees.

A Stop & Shop spokeswoman announced the closure yesterday, according to Seacoastonline.com. "We underwent a customer business review and made the unfortunate and difficult decision to close the store," Faith Weiner told the news outlet. Since the store's 140 full- and part-time employees are part of a collective bargaining agreement, some may be offered positions at other stores, Weiner said. Barry Tibbetts, the store's manager, told Portland news channel WCSH 6 the closure was "a total shock." The store will close Oct. 30.

The store opened in June 2007 and was Stop & Shop's first store in Maine. When it opened it faced opposition from locals and a lawsuit from Hannaford Bros. Co., according to Seacoastonline.com. The town manager and local lawmakers recently succeeded in convincing the state to change the liquor license laws so the store could get a liquor license, according to Portland news station WMTW.
