Storm knocks out power to thousands

A winter storm that hit the state late Wednesday knocked out power for around 12,000 customers, with Penobscot, Oxford and Somerset counties hit the hardest.

The Associated Press reported Emera Maine, formerly Bangor Hydro Electric, reported almost 7,000 outages Thursday, most of which were in Penobscot County. Central Maine Power Co. reported around 4,800 outages.

The storm has also caused state offices to open two hours later everywhere but Aroostook County, where state offices will be closed for the day. The speed limit on the Maine Turnpike has been lowered to 45 mph as a result of the storm as well.
