Study: Bear hunters spend $35.4M in Maine

Bear hunters spend $35.4 million every year in Maine, according to a new study prepared for the Maine Office of Tourism and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported that the study, conducted by Southwick Associates, also found that 565 jobs are directly associated with bear hunting, which has a total economic value of $53 million in the state.

The study comes ahead of controversial referendum question on Election Day that will ask if Maine should ban the use of bait, hounds and traps for bear hunting.

The state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is currently facing a lawsuit from referendum supporters, alleging the department has been using “taxpayer resources and agency staff time to run a coordinated political campaign,” the Portland Press Herald reported.
