Study: ME tax burden on private-sector income high

According to a study released Tuesday by the Maine Heritage Policy Center, Maine's tax burden as a percent of private-sector personal income is sixth highest in the country.

The study found that Maine's tax burden compared with private-sector personal income is 18%, the highest in New England, according to a press release. Traditional methodology for calculating tax burden pegs Maine's burden at 11.7%. MHPC chose to calculate it based on private-sector income, excluding public-sector income, because the public sector "can only redistribute income through taxes and spending."

Maine's private-sector personal income is the 12th smallest in the country at 63.9%, according to the release.
