Study: Older workers key for Aroostook Co.

Keeping retirement-age adults in the workforce will be essential to the Aroostook County economy, according to a new report.

The work force analysis, completed by the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine and released last week, found nearly 40% of survey respondents said they would continue working past traditional retirement age, or roughly age 65. In the County, where 30% of residents are 65 or older, versus 26% statewide, those intentions mean local employers must reconsider their employee benefits and training programs, Mike Eisensmith, director of the study's funder Northern Maine Development Commission, told Mainebiz.

The report updates a 2000 analysis from USM's Center for Business and Economic Research. The full report can be viewed here.
