Study: Sears Island port could have $3.6B impact

A consulting company last week released a report that says the construction of a container port in Searsport would generate $3.6 billion in economic activity in Maine.

The report, completed by The Cornell Group Inc. in Fairfax, Va., says the construction of a two-berth container port, which would cost $194 million, on Sears Island would create 2,200 jobs and provide $5.6 million in state and municipal tax revenue.

The Maine Port Authority hired the company to provide an assessment of Maine's port infrastructure and to make recommendations for the future. The MPA's board recommends that any development of a port in Searsport be consistent with the outcome of the Sears Island Joint Use Planning Committee, which was created in April to develop a future plan for the 941-acre island.
