Art agencies in hotter water

The second half of a state audit into four cultural agencies has revealed the organizations may have inappropriately spent significantly more for lobbying purposes than previously thought and that laws may have been broken, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The Maine Arts Commission, Maine State Museum, Maine Historic Preservation Commission and Maine State Library are under fire for allegedly using $4,000 in state funds to pay for lobbying efforts to garner more state funding for their groups. The groups have denied the money was used for lobbying. Now, state officials auditing the groups suspect that significantly more than $4,000 was used inappropriately, and that laws may have been broken, the paper reported.

The second part of the audit report will be released in several weeks, according to the Daily News.
