Sugarloaf ski resort in Carrabassett Valley has named a top executive as its new president, nearly four months before its current leader is set to retire.
Karl Strand, who currently serves as vice president of mountain operations at Sugarloaf’s sister resort, Sunday River, will become the resort’s next president and general manager, Sugarloaf announced Tuesday. The current leader, John Diller, will retire in April 2015.
Sugarloaf’s appointment of Strand comes after an extensive four-month search, the resort said, which included many highly qualified internal and external candidates.
“Karl’s exceptional leadership skills made him stand out, and he showcases a diverse knowledge of resort operations,” Stephen Kircher, president of parent company Boyne Resorts’ Eastern Operations, said in a prepared statement.
“This along with his familiarity with Sugarloaf’s unique DNA and his close relationships with team members throughout our network of resorts made him the best overall candidate among a very competitive and experienced field,” he continued. “He is the right person to guide the resort into its next chapter and the remaining aspects of the Sugarloaf 2020 vision.”
Diller said in a prepared statement that “Sugarloaf is dear to my heart, and while retiring as general manager will be difficult, it will be made easier knowing that the resort will be led by someone as uniquely qualified as Karl Strand.”
