Summit completes 68-mile natural gas pipeline

Summit Natural Gas of Maine has completed its 68-mile transmission pipeline that will eventually deliver natural gas to 17 communities in central Maine.

The pipeline’s completion this week marks one part of the company’s multi-year Kennebec Valley project, according to a press release.

The newly completed pipeline will provide natural gas to residential customers in Augusta, Fairfield, Gardiner, Hallowell, Randolph and Waterville. Summit has already signed up over 1,800 residentials customers for natural gas service.

Starting this month, Summit will begin construction of an additional 85 miles in pipeline in the Kennebec Valley region and another 66 miles in Cumberland, Falmouth and Yarmouth. Over 60 employees and more than 700 construction workers have contributed to the project.

Several companies and organizations have benefited from Summit’s natural gas projects, according to the press release, including UPM Madison, the city of Augusta, Skowhegan Savings, Inland Hospital in Waterville, Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, and Sappi Fine Paper North America in Skowhegan, all of which have signed contracts with Summit.
