Following a lawsuit filed last month, Summit Natural Gas of Maine officials said the company plans to pay subcontractors $38 million by Jan. 10 for work on a natural gas pipeline through the Kennebec Valley.
The Kennebec Journal reported that around 75% of the payment is owed to Turner-based K&K Excavation and its subcontractors. All of the parties owed money were working under the Wisconsin-based Schmid Pipeline Construction Inc., which left the job in November after what it said were delayed payments. Since Schmid’s departure, subcontractors for the project continued to work unpaid.
In December, Schmid filed a lawsuit against Summit seeking $72 million in damages for late payments and for underestimating the scope of work. The paper reported that lawsuit included subcontractor payments, but the company’s lawyer in the case declined to say how much of Summit’s pending payments overlap with the amount identified in the lawsuit.
