Sunday River Resort in Newry has announced a plan to guide its development through 2030, focused on new infrastructure, year-round business, and reaching a net-zero carbon impact.

Improvements for the ski area will include the implementation of radio frequency identification technology; snowmaking, chairlift and facilities upgrades; real estate development; and new attractions for beyond the ski season, according to a news release.

“The next decade will be one of the most transformational in our 60-year history, assuring that Sunday River will remain one of the top resorts in the Northeast,” said Dana Bullen, president and general manager. “The 2030 vision will give us a clear path to success as a sustainable year-round destination.”

The plan is based partially on feedback from season pass-holders, resort team members and New England skiers, according to the release.

Some projects are already underway. In 2019, Sunday River began managing the Sunday River Golf Club. This month, Sunday River now bought the golf club and plans improvements.

The resort also recently bought 450 acres on Merrill Hill, adjacent to its South Ridge and Aurora Peak areas, and plans to offer home sites with ski-in/ski-out access via a new chairlift.

Ahead of the 2020-21 season, Sunday River will add radio frequency identification (RFID) technology enabling direct-to-lift access for ticket and season pass-holders. With a Sunday River-enabled RFID card, a guest will be able to load lift tickets or a season pass onto the card and head directly to the lift upon arrival.

The dual-frequency technology was unveiled this winter as the first of its kind in the world, at Sunday River’s sister resorts — Big Sky Resort in Montana and Loon Mountain Resort in New Hampshire.

Plans are in the works to renovate Sunday River's largest conference space, the grand ballroom in the Grand Summit Hotel, with improvements to the room's appearance and new audio-visual technologies. The goal is to attract more conferences and weddings, which have become essential to Sunday River’s year-round business.

The resort also plans to build a new observation tower atop North Peak in order to expand visits throughout the year. The tower will be accessible by Sunday River's Chondola lift, which is open in the summer and fall for scenic lift rides.

Further along in the 10-year plan, projects include upgraded chairlifts, extensive snowmaking upgrades, a hydro-therapy spa, a new SnowSports School building, new summer attractions such as a mountain coaster, and more.
