Sunday River to install $7.2M "chondola"

Sunday River yesterday announced $14 million in summer upgrades, including a plan to install a $7.2 million "chondola".

The operator of Sunday River in Newry, Michigan-based Boyne USA Resorts, expects the chondola, a hybrid between a chair lift and a gondola, to boost year-round traffic at the resort because regardless of weather it can transport skiers and snowboarders, as well as summer tourists, to the resort's North Peak, which has a restaurant and other four-season facilities, according to a press release. Boyne, which also operates Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley, plans to install the lift by the 2008-2009 winter ski season.

During the summer, Boyne also plans to invest $1.7 million to expand the resort's snowmaking capabilities and $1.4 million in the resort's condos and hotels.
