Survey: Mainers support financial reform

The majority of Maine voters support national financial reform, according to a survey from The Pew Economic Policy Group, a Washington, D.C.-based division of think tank Pew Charitable Trusts.

The national survey commissioned by The Mellman Group and Voter/Consumer Research Inc. polled 500 likely 2010 voters in Maine during two days in April, and found that 78% of respondents support a comprehensive financial reform plan that includes enhanced financial system monitoring, a method to prevent large firms from adversely impacting businesses when they fail and increasing transparency in the financial markets, according to a press release from Pew. Fifty-eight percent of voters said Congress should tackle the issue now instead of focusing on other initiatives.

Meanwhile, both Maine U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins have offered changes to financial regulation reforms under consideration in the U.S. Senate, according to the Sun Journal. So far, Snowe has successfully pitched two amendments to protect small businesses from being hurt by the reforms adopted by the Senate last week. The amendments repeal a requirement that banks disclose details on customers' deposit accounts and the accounts' locations to a new oversight panel, and allow small business owners to continue to use their homes as collateral for loans. Snowe plans to introduce two more small business-related amendments this week. Collins has proposed five amendments, none of which have yet been adopted.
