A quarterly survey by the national employment services firm Manpower Group reports greater Portland will be the best region in the country to find a job in the next quarter.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the survey, which includes contact with more than 18,000 employers in 100 metropolitan areas, reflects how confident employers in a given area are that they will be hiring in the next quarter.
Around 150 Maine employers were contacted for the survey, 27% of whom indicated they planned to hire more employees in the next quarter. The other 66% said they plan to maintain current staff levels.
Chris Hall, executive director of the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, told the paper he was initially surprised by the survey but said, in his experience, many Portland-area firms are looking to hire but having difficulty finding the workers they need.
The survey ranked Portland ahead of the other high-ranking cities like Tucson, Ariz., Des Moines, Iowa, and San Jose, Calif. The cities that ranked the worst for finding a job included New York City, Seattle, New Orleans and Philadelphia.
